Biosketch
I am a sociologist and researcher in health and medical sociology. I did my MSc in Health, Medicine and Society, followed by a PhD in Sociology at Iscte-IUL, after being a registered nurse for seven years. In my doctoral studies, I developed research on the impact of biobanking activities for the health system in Portugal, and how these infrastructures are positioned within the healthcare organization.
I am also involved in research networks on ethical, social, and legal issues of biobanking and genetic testing. Currently, I am project manager, researcher, and invited lecturer at the Lisbon School of Medicine.
Testimony
iMM was my home for two years during my research on biobanking. Sometimes it was difficult for other researchers to understand why a sociologist would be interested in such laboratory things. However, I was welcomed by an incredible team – from the board to the staff. Not only did I learn a lot, as I felt as part of the team in a way that exceeded my expectations, although I was an outsider.
I had the opportunity to be immersed in a challenging research setting, where I could feel the environment of “science in the making”. This experience made my PhD come true with the first research ever on this topic in Portugal. I am so grateful for having been part of iMM community during that time.
