Biosketch
My name is Joana, and I am a biotechnologist. I hold a BSc in Biotechnology and a MSc in Molecular Biotechnology, both granted by Universidade de Aveiro. After working as a researcher for 2 years, I have started my PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics, also at Universidade de Aveiro, in collaboration with Technische Universität Berlin. It was during my PhD that I had the opportunity to join iMM for a 6-month internship while working on the characterization of antimicrobial peptides from bacterial origin.
I am currently working as a PhD researcher at Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina & Escola Superior de Biotecnologia – Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Porto. My research focuses of the development and characterization of next-generation probiotics and functional foods.
Testimony
The time I have spent at iMM was short but full. It was a great opportunity for me to acquired scientific skills that I couldn’t have learn anywhere else and that had a huge impact on my career, leading me where and who I am today. Also, I have won in terms of networking, with connects and collaborations that I keep until today, and friends that I cherish and that made this period – that could have been hard and lonely – one of the best experiences that I had. At iMM, I have grown, both scientifically and personally.
