Sandra Aguiar graduated in 2003 in Applied Chemistry-Biotechnology by the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2004 she moved to iMM where she completed her master studies in Clinical Microbiology in 2006 and PhD studies in 2011 in Health Sciences with specialization in Microbiology.
During her post-graduated studies her research focused in understanding the capacity of an important paediatric pathogen, namely Streptococcus pneumoniae, to adapt and respond to the introduction of vaccines (namely, PCV7 and PCV13). Following her PhD she was granted a post-doctoral grant at the iMM where she continued to study Streptococcus pneumoniae with a strong emphasis in the development of new molecular diagnostic methods.
During her stay at the Faculdade de Medicina Sandra was also a lecturer of Microbiology classes. In 2015 she shifted her research interests towards the development of new therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases by starting a new post-doctoral grant at the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária from Universidade de Lisboa under the supervision of Doctor Frederico Aires da Silva with the co-supervision of Professor Miguel Castanho from iMM. Recently, Sandra moved to the pharmaceutical industry to work as Diagnostic Solution Expert at Roche.
Testimony
Performing my post-graduate studies at the iMM was an amazing opportunity. iMM is one of the most modern and well-equipped research institutions performing cutting edge research. Moreover the PhD programme and the PhD students group, along with the institute facilities, the wide diversity of research lines and the amazing scientific lectures made the whole PhD journey amazing.
