Bárbara Oliveira began her career in flow cytometry after graduating from Faculty of Sciences in Lisbon, Portugal with a MSc. in Molecular Biology and Genetics. In pursuit of this degree, Bárbara utilized flow cytometry to characterize cell populations essential for starfish regeneration.
Bárbara quickly developed a passion for flow cytometry which led her to pursue the role of Flow Cytometry Technician at Instituto de Medicina Molecular in 2017. In this role, Bárbara was responsible for operating cell sorters, ensuring the quality of the flow instrumentation, and educating researchers on how to the use the equipment and software.
In 2019, Bárbara joined the Flow Cytometry Core Facility (FCCF) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, NY. As a Flow Cytometry Specialist, she further developed her knowledge in flow cytometry theory and took on more responsibilities within the core. Her goal is to always go the extra mile when assisting researchers by helping improve their protocols. In this way, she strives to ensure that all users obtain the most accurate results when using the technology for their experiments. Bárbara continues to share her knowledge on flow cytometry best practices by actively publishing tips and tricks online through the Flow Post-it Program at FCCF MSKCC.
