My name is Raquel Calçada and I am a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Prof. Lukas Sommer at the University of Zurich. In April 2022 I finished my PhD in stem cell biology, in the lab of Prof. Lukas Sommer. During my PhD I worked with human pluripotent stem cells and established a differentiation protocol, making use of several techniques such as bulk and single cell RNA-sequencing, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy.
Before moving to Switzerland, I completed a master’s in Biomedical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon.
Testimony
I did my master’s thesis in the lab of Prof. Domingos Henrique, at iMM. During my master’s thesis I worked with mouse embryonic stem cells and single molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH). I also had the opportunity to improve my programming skills, by using both R and Matlab.
It was a truly enriching experience, during which I had the chance to discuss scientific data and start my scientific career. iMM offered an international and friendly environment, which allowed me to find answers to my scientific questions whilst meeting outstanding scientists.
