Biosketch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rita Fior is a Developmental Biologist, fascinated by how cells interact with each other, to deliver instructions, to collaborate, to compete or synchronize their actions. From studying chick neurogenesis and Notch signaling during her PhD, she then moved on to study zebrafish somitogenesis in her Post-Doc. Throughout her career Fior was always interested in the transcriptional networks and cellular interactions that lead to differentiation and stem cell maintenance. By the end of her Post\u2013Doc under the supervision of Leonor Sa\u00fade (iMM, PT) and Julian Lewis (FRS, CRUK), she became interested in cancer. This change in her scientific interest started with the awareness that there are several equivalent chemotherapy options, but no available test to determine the best therapy for each individual patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this goal, Fior optimized and challenged the zebrafish larvae xenograft model to test if it could reveal inter- and intra-tumor heterogeneity and differential response to therapy (Fior et al, 2017, PNAS). A groundwork to develop zebrafish patient derived xenografts (zPDX) or zAvatars for personalized medicine. The Fior Lab is actively testing the predictive power of these larval zAvatars in colorectal and breast cancer, with very promising results (Costa, Ferreira et al, 2020, EBiomedicine, Rebelo Almeida et al, 2020 Comm Biology, Varanda et al, 2020, Cancers). In parallel, the Lab is investigating the cellular and molecular interactions that occur between human tumor cells and zebrafish innate immunity to discover new mechanisms of innate immune evasion (P\u00f3voa et al 2021, Nature Comm).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work is being recognized since her PhD with several prizes and honorable mentions such as Genetics of The Year (Genetics Society),BioMED Central Research award, Crioestaminal and BIAL Clinical Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rita has also extensive experience in teaching in several Master and PhD programs and was author and co-editor of a textbook in Molecular and Cell Biology of Cancer, Springer (Fior and Zilh\u00e3o, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Testimony<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My experience at iMM was fundamental in my research path-not only was the place I did my PhD with Prof. Domingos Henrique, but also where I did most of my Post-doctoral work with Leonor Sa\u00fade. With Domingos I learnt the core of being a scientist \u2013 how to go after my curiosity but to be thorough in my knowledge \u2013 I needed to study a lot to start talking or arguing with Domingos, he knows so much that you need to prepare yourself very well for any conversation- I think this was fundamental for the way I do science. Then I went for a joint post-doc with Leonor Sa\u00fade and Julian Lewis (CRUK). Leonor at the time was at the Gulbenkian Institute (IGC), but soon got a position at iMM and I came back to my PhD home ;). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always felt I had all the conditions to pursue my work at iMM, with a fantastic imaging support \u2013 always helping us in the best possible way! With Leonor I learnt so much, on how to be more positive and to lead a team. Leonor takes the best from every person \u2013 and has a very clear vision on how people can complement each other. Leonor is my special mentor (and friend), someone I look up to and that inspires me in many ways, but in particular in the way I try to lead my team. So definitely iMM was fundamental for my research path and still is, because of all the fantastic people that are there \u2026Places are people\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
