Work Experience: I have experience in scientific research in Neural Development, Cancer and Redox Biology at several R&D institutions, such as Instituto de Medicina Molecular at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, School of Life Sciences of the University of Dundee (UK), and Centro de Química e Bioquímica at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. I am currently one of the co-founders of Sea4Us, a biotechnology/pharmaceutical drug discovery company focused on research and development of new medications for unmet clinical needs, using novel compounds of marine origin.

Testimony

My experience at iMM started in 2005 and ended in 2012, and included the period of my PhD and beginning of postdoctoral studies.

After my graduation in Microbiology and Genetics in 2005 I joined the Domingos Henrique’s lab, which was dedicated to the study of vertebrate neurodevelopment. This was where I learned how to do proper science, i.e., questioning/criticizing all conclusions presented by other researchers, deciding which scientific curiosities I should pursue and focus my studies on, employing and improving state of the art techniques, troubleshooting, and analysing data and presenting the conclusions orally and in written form, among others. All of this was essential to build my scientific mindset and to improve all of my science-related skills.

At the same time, iMM presented itself as a great social hub for scientists. Not only it promoted extensive networking between scientists of different scientific fields and institutions, leading to the establishment of interdisciplinary collaborations, but also promoted social interactions, in particular, within the PhD students community, which turned iMM into a great place to learn and work.
