Kátia Jesus holds a B.Sc. in Biotechnology (Agricultural College of Coimbra, 2015) and a M.Sc. in Biomedical Research (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, 2018). Kátia took part in two ERASMUS+ Mobility programs (2015 and 2017/2018) for her B.Sc. and M.Sc. project, developed at the Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH (Göttingen, Germany). In parallel to her thesis work, she was awarded a Research fellowship (2015), and a Research assistant position (2017).

Throughout her education, Kátia did several lab rotations. As a result she is a co-author of a paper published in the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. After finishing her M.Sc., Kátia worked as a Research Master Fellow funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e para a Tecnologia (FCT- Portugal) at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (Lisboa). The results obtained here led to the co-authorship in a Poster presented at the Keystone Symposia on B cell-T cell interactions (USA), and a Poster presentation at the XLV Annual Meeting Sociedade Portuguesa de Imunologia (Coimbra), which was selected for a Speed communication.

Currently, she is enrolled as a PhD Student in the Integrative Biology and Biomedicine Programme at the Instituto Gulbenkian Ciência (2019 and ongoing). Herein, she was awarded a PhD fellowship by FCT in the 2020 call and became a EIT-Health@Ageing PhD student (2021 cohort). She wants to pursue a career in Science in Academia.

Testimony

As someone that comes from a background that is very centered in fundamental science (far away from the impact it can have for the patient and society), working at the iMM – an institute so close to the people – was a truly inspiring and nice experience. It helped me expand my horizons in the way that I look at the research I do or learn about. iMM brought me closer to the human side of Science.
