Biosketch

I left Portugal at the age of 19 and braved the unknown by enrolling in a BSc programme at Aston University in the UK.

A Microbiologist turned Biomedical Scientist, I worked for the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for half a decade before deciding to return to the Portuguese sun to complete an MSc in Biomedical Sciences (specialisation in Molecular Biology in Tropical & International Health) at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) – NOVA University Lisbon.

Just before COVID-19 started making headlines, I went back to the UK and joined the fantastic Biosciences and Chemistry technical team at Sheffield Hallam University. This experience was both sweet and short as I was successful in securing my current position as a funded PhD student looking to identify novel therapies for metastatic soft tissue sarcoma.

Testimony

I came to iMM in 2018 where I joined Nuno Santos Lab as an external student for my MSc thesis project.

One of the things that struck me the most was the fantastic facilities and environment at iMM that not only promoted growth as a student/researcher but also cultivated this sense of scientific community and friendships amongst iMMers.

During my year here, not only did I attend conferences and conduct some interesting research with the support of a fabulous team, but also, I made some great friends and definitely caught the “research bug” which reinforced my desire to pursue a PhD degree.
